This damage tends to happen either when the toe of the bat at some point has got wet and then swells, over time it dries out and then becomes very weak, this is when the feathering process starts.
  Another common cause of the toe spliting is when the bat has faced a yorker, this is when the ball is jammed between the toe of the bat and a hard suface resulting in what looks like a completely unrepairable bat. However these can 99.9% of the time still be repaired.

The Tuff Toe - In my opinion this repair is the most reliable fix of all, although it isnt necessarily the most attractive to look at it is certainly the strongest, then again if it's your favorite bat and can't bare the thought of it braking completely then this is the fix.
 
Twine Fix - This is also a excellent repair for a broken toe, Traditionally this was always the method used and tried and trusted over many many years, however this seems to have made a return and is used by many of the top players right up to the very top International players.
